We are hooked on the Three Dark Crowns series by Kendare Blake. This is a novella of two short stories that tie in the history of the Island of Fennbirn and their Queens. Typically we find novellas an annoyance and a ploy to get readers to buy more of their work and don’t add to the actual series but in this case it was the opposite. This novella was not only refreshing but relevant to the series itself. In The Young Queens readers get a glance at the young lives of Mirabella, Arsinoe, and Katherine before they were sent to their separate houses and families. We are able to catch a glimpse into their relationship with each other before they were torn away to be trained to kill each other. In The Oracle Queen we learn the legend of Elsabet, the Oracle Queen. She is the reason all queens with the oracle gift are drowned at birth because she went mad and killed off those that were close to her. But what we find out is that the legend isn’t completely true and there were some manipulation from the Aaron family that make the legend not as it seems.
